Day in the Life of… Ellie Riordan, head of compliance at Tembo – Mortgage Strategy

My alarm goes off at…

…7.30am. I’ve never been an early bird so, much to my dismay, the alarm is snoozed one last time and then it’s time to get ready for a day in the office.

I live only a short Tube ride away, and Sonny (my cavapoo) is a great travelling companion.

I wanted to work in the finance industry because…

…I feel like we left school desperately under-prepared for the challenges of personal finance and, whether we like it or not, mortgages are one of the only ways to get on the property ladder.

I’m hopeful that what used to be seen as a bit of a dreary job is now recognised as an
exciting, dynamic career path

Add to that the widening financial inequalities between generations when it comes to the housing market and it’s a minefield for parents and children alike to understand how to navigate the homebuying process.

When I started working in mortgages, I thought it was bonkers that I had gone so long without knowing any of this crucial information. It’s easy to see that, without the right tools, products and communications, customers could be opening themselves up to a world of risk.

Helping clients to achieve their dream of homeownership in safe, demystified and well-managed transactions is what mortgage dreams are made of.

Something that has surprised me about my job is…

…the amount of fabulous internal hires we’ve made into the compliance department.

You’re constantly changing priorities, which keeps it interesting

I’m hopeful that what once was seen as a bit of a dreary job is now recognised as an exciting, dynamic career path that appeals to a broader range of talented individuals.

It’s great to see people from different backgrounds bringing fresh perspectives into compliance.

A misconception about my role is…

…that it’s all about enforcing rules and saying no.

In reality, compliance is more about creating solutions within a framework to help us innovate responsibly to better protect our clients.

In a world of new regulations, new tech and an ever-changing macro-economic environment, it’s about making sure everyone is set up for success.

My typical working day entails…

…in compliance, it really can vary. No two days ever look the same.

My fellow compliance people will know that sometimes the role can be quite reactive: responding to a customer, reviewing a new website feature, understanding a new piece of regulation — you name it. You’re constantly changing priorities, which keeps it interesting.

I work in the office in London a few days a week and, of course, I bring Sonny (the best part of everyone’s week).

A perk of the job is…

…I work with a talented, close-knit team who are all very motivated to find the best outcomes for our customers, and this ethos is shared among marketing, sales, tech and beyond. The merch is pretty good too!

My favourite work memory is…

…in November this year we celebrated a record-breaking year together as a business, enjoying some winter sun in Portugal.

A few days of delicious food, a spa and sunset strolls were a perfect way to wrap up the year.

To unwind after work, I…

…will often be found frequenting the restaurants and bars around Bermondsey Street in London. Failing that, I will probably be baking a cake or sitting at my sewing machine.
